Links between Childhood Asthma and Obesity

Asthma is a chronic disease that causes airways to become inflamed. Does your child have this disease? If so, you’re no doubt familiar with symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and trouble breathing. Today, a whopping nine million children under age 18 have asthma – or have had it in the past. Click here to read more.

Did you know that May is National Egg Month? Well, it is!

White shelled eggs are produced by hens with white feathers and white ear lobes. Brown shelled eggs are produced by hens with red feathers and red ear lobes. Brown egg-layers usually are slightly larger and require more food, so brown eggs usually cost more than white.

China produces the most eggs, about 160 billion annually. In the United States, it’s about 65 billion eggs per year. A hen can lay about 250 eggs per year. Here are a couple more interesting facts about eggs:

  • There are 150 species of chicken.
  • Contrary to popular folklore, souffles do not fall if there is a loud noise. The rise and fall of every souffle is a direct result of temperature.
  • Eggs usually can last six to eight weeks if refrigerated. To find out if eggs are bad, you can always use the “float” test. If they float in salt water, they are bad. Or crack one open and the smell will tell.

May is Military Appreciation Month

National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM), as designated by Congress, provides a period encompassing both the history and recognition of our armed services with an in-depth look at the diversity of its individuals and achievements. It allows our military, through the participation of the community with those who serve, to encourage patriotism and love for America.

This month gives the nation a time and place on which to focus and draw attention to our many expressions of appreciation of our armed services via numerous venues and also to learn about our vast American History. Special observances this month include Loyalty Day, May 1; VE Day, May 8; Military Spouse Appreciation Day, May 11; Armed Forces Day, May 19; and Memorial Day, May 30.

During May, we honor all military personnel: those who have served throughout our history, the men and women in uniform today along with their families, and those who have given their lives in defense of our freedoms that we enjoy today. NMAM recognizes those on active duty in all the branches of the service plus retirees, veterans and their families – well over 90 million Americans and more than 230 years of our nation’s history.

Mother’s Day is May 13

Some form of Mother’s Day celebration is observed in just about every country and culture around the globe at different times throughout the year.

The United States celebrates Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May. In the 1880s, there were several attempts to establish a nationally-observed Mother’s Day, but none succeeded beyond the local level. The holiday was ultimately created by Anna Jarvis of Grafton, West Virginia, in 1908, as a day to honor mothers. Jarvis wanted to accomplish her mother’s dream of making a celebration for all mothers, although the idea didn’t really take off until she enlisted the services of wealthy Philadelphia merchant John Wanamaker. She kept promoting the holiday until President Woodrow Wilson made it an official national holiday in 1914.

The holiday eventually became so highly commercialized that many, including its founder Anna Jarvis, considered its original purpose superseded. Jarvis ended up opposing the holiday she had helped to create. She died in 1948, regretting what had become of her holiday.

April is the month for the Boston Marathon

The first Boston Marathon was run in 1897. It was originally a local event, but its fame and status have attracted runners from around the world. For most of its history, the Boston Marathon was a free event, and the only prize awarded for winning the race was a wreath woven from olive branches. However, corporate sponsored cash prizes began to be awarded in the 1980s, when professional athletes began to refuse to run the race without cash awards. The first cash prize for winning the marathon was awarded in 1986.

Women were not allowed to enter the Boston Marathon officially until 1972. Roberta (Bobbi) Gibb is recognized as the first woman to run the entire Boston Marathon in 1966. In 1967, Kathrine Switzer, who had registered as K.V. Switzer, was the first woman to run with a race number. She finished, despite a celebrated incident in which race official Jack Semple tried to rip off her numbers and eject her from the race.

We have a very special event planned for April
Click here for details about this April Fitting Event

The event will repeat on Thursday, April 19, again from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Klein’s Orthopedic and Medical Equipment, located at State Road and Broad Blvd. in Cuyahoga Falls.

ABC breast care specialist Sue Blue-Losey will be available for private fittings and consultations. Appointments appreciated!

Get better locks!

Okay, so you’re in a hurry to go on a short errand, and you rush out the door without thinking. Mistake. Even the best locks can’t protect you from burglaries if you don’t use them.

If you do remember to lock the door, doing it won’t help much if you don’t have a good lock. The National Crime Prevention Council estimates that only half of us have dead-bolt locks on all of our entry doors. That means ALL doors, not just the front door.

Windows should be locked as well. Many a thief or home invader is willing to climb through a window to gain access. The National Crime Prevention Council has other advice on prevention:

    • Trim bushes close to the house so a burglar can’t hide there.

    • Never hide a key on the premises. Crooks are experts at finding them. Instead, leave a spare key with a trusted friend or neighbor.

    • Make friends with your neighbors. They will keep an eye on your place and call the police when suspicious activities occur.

    • Light the entrance to your home, including the front door, the back door, the sliding door and any others.

  • Stop mail and newspaper deliveries when you leave for a vacation or a business trip. Piled up newspapers are an obvious tip off that the house is empty.

Beans: Heart Healthy!

If you don’t know beans about beans, here’s a start. They’re good for your heart. They fight cholesterol even among people at risk for heart disease. One study of pinto beans, the most common kind of bean, by the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center shows that regularly eating just a small amount three times a week leads to cholesterol reduction.

That means you don’t have to cook a whole pot of beans to get that benefit along with other vitamins including vitamin B6. Pinto beans are a common filling for burritos. They can also be eaten whole, in broth, mashed or refried.

Car Insurance know-how

Many people think comprehensive auto insurance protects against everything, including collisions with other vehicles, as the name implies. Insurers use the word comprehensive to refer to coverage of damage caused by events other than vehicls collisions – fire, flood, storm damage, animal collisions, therft or vandalism.

Getting car and home insurance from the same company doesn’t always get you the best rates, so shop around. Rates don’t always drop when a driver reaches the age of 25. It depends upon his or her claims history, make of the car and other factors.

Monitoring High Blood Pressure at Home

Has your doctor recommended keeping closer tabs on your blood pressure? One convenient way to do this is by monitoring your blood pressure at home, in between doctor visits. You can do this in a matter of minutes.Click here to read more.

We have some really easy tips for better health!

Some of these ideas, recommended by health writer Tara Parker-Pope, are not new, but put together they can make a big difference in your weight and fitness level.

First, try to eat together at the table. People consume more when eating in front of the TV. And foods eaten “on the go” are generally higher in calories.

Second, spend some time playing with your kids. Ride a bike with them, jump rope, play touch football or soccer at least 20 minutes a day.

Third, focus on your favorite foods. Instead of trying to give up your favorites, eat smaller portions or switch to lower-fat versions. They can be just as good, and many people say they can’t taste any difference at all.

Fourth, eat soup! Yes, soup! Volume foods like soup leave you feeling full on fewer calories. Check “The Volumetric Eating Plan” by Barbara Rolls for more information.

Finally, eat at home as much as possible. Restaurant food tends to have more fat, calories and sodium. And in recent years, the trend has been for serving sizes to dramatically increase.

Have you had the chance to look over our March specials? Click here for details about this money-saving month-long sale!

We’re having a month-long sale on diabetic socks. Buy two and GET ONE FREE! You can also buy one pair of diabetic shoes and receive $50 OFF your second pair!

We won’t be billing your insurance for this sale, but Klein’s happily accepts cash, credit cards and checks, so stop by and stock up!

March is also Patient Safety and Sleep Awareness Month, so we’ve put all bathroom safety products and pillows on sale. We have all the products you need to live a safer and more comfortable life. Come in today for the best selection. If you’ve ever worried about a parent falling in the bathroom, you should come to see our easy-to-install grab bars that make getting into and out of the shower easier than ever.

Did you know?…..At Klein’s Orthopedic and Medical Equipment, we accept a wide selection of insurance plans. If we do not accept yours, we will refer you to someone who does. That’s our promise, because that’s how important your health is to us! We’ve been serving our customers for more than 45 years.

March is National Nutrition Month

National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign sponsored annually by the American Diabetic Association (ADA). Eating well can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, obesity and hypertension. Eating well means a variety of healthy foods in the right amounts so your body gets the nutrients needed to maintain good health and work properly. The following are tips on how to practice good nutrition this and every month.

    • Eat smaller meals, including a vegetable as the center of the plate, with smaller meat and starch servings. Include at least one serving of fruit and vegetables with every meal.

    • Drink more water between meals. Try veggies or a handful of nuts for a snack and fresh fruit for something sweet.

    • Reduce your intake of deep-fried foods and cancer-causing transfats and baked goods.

  • Reduce the amount of added sugar, corn syrup, and salt in your diet. Use spices to season your food instead.

Bananas Fight Heartburn, Depression and More

Most people know that bananas are an excellent resource for potassium (one ripe banana supplies more than 10 percent of an adult’s daily requirement). That’s important because people with a low dietary intake of potassium are 28 percent more likely to suffer a stroke than those who consume higher levels, according to a study conducted by Tulane University. Lesser known medical uses of bananas include the following.

    • Depression: Bananas are a good source of tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin, a chemical in the brain that helps regulate mood.

    • Diarrhea: Unripened bananas and plantains are a rich source of tannins, astringent plant compounds that help stop water accumulation in the intestines, thus diminishing diarrhea.

  • Heartburn and Ulcers: Bananas neutralize acidity and soothe and coat the esophageal tissue with pectin, a substance used as a thickener and stabilizer in jellies.

Important: In rare cases, bananas may trigger an allergic reaction. Bananas with blackened skin can increase blood sugar levels. Because bananas have high levels of potassium, people with kidney problems should check with their doctors before eating this fruit.

Is it a heart attack?

More than a million Americans have heart attacks each year. Nearly half of them die. Why does this happen? In many cases, it’s because people don’t take action quickly enough. A heart attack occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle is blocked. If blood flow isn’t restored quickly to that part of the heart muscle, it lacks nutrition and dies. That’s why it’s so important to seek medical help right away.Click here to read more.

February is American Heart Month!

The human heart weighs less than one pound. The average weight for women is eight ounces, while for men is it ten ounces. As a result, women’s hearts beat faster than male hearts.

Your heart beats with enough strength to shoot blood a distance of 30 feet. Your left lung is smaller than your right lung in order to make room in your chest cavity for your heart.

On average, one million barrels worth of blood is pumped through the heart in a lifetime. Isn’t that amazing? Every year your heart beats about 35 million times. That comes to about 100,000 beats per day, or 70 beats per minute. Over the course of a lifetime, that adds up to an average of 2.5 billion heartbeats!

Your heart is made up almost entirely of muscle. The blood vessels fed by your heart are more than 60,000 miles long. According to the Cleveland Clinic, they could wrap around the world twice.

The human heart begins to beat as early as four weeks after conception. Scientists believe that by eight weeks, when the embryo is only an inch long, the heart is fully developed.

February is also Black History Month

Black History Month began as Negro History Week by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926. His goal was to educate the American people about African-American history, focusing on African-Americans’ cultural backgrounds and reputable achievements. According to historian John Hope Franklin, Woodson “continued to express hope that Negro History Week would outlive its usefulness.”

The purpose of Black History Month is to promote awareness of African-American history to the general public. It is arguable that despite the opinions of several critics, Black History Month has several advantages, and to an extent, Woodson’s hopes were realized.

During Black History Month, African American history is taught to thousands of students at the elementary, high school and college levels.

US Marines Land on Iwo Jima Feb. 19, 1945

The Battle of Iwo Jima (Operation Detachment) was a major battle in which the United States fought for and captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Empire of Japan. The US invasion, charged with the mission of capturing the three airfields on Iwo Jima, resulted in some of the fiercest fighting in the Pacific Campaign of WWII.

The Imperial Japanese Army positions on the island were heavily fortified, with a vast network of bunkers, hidden artillery and 11 miles of underground tunnels. The Americans were covered by extensive naval and air support, capable of delivering an enormous amount of firepower onto the Japanese positions. The battle was the first American attack on the Japanese Home Islands and the Imperial soldiers defended their positions tenaciously.

Iwo Jima was also the only US Marine battle where the American overall casualties exceeded the Japanese, although Japanese combat deaths numbered three times that of Americans. Of the more than 18,000 Japanese soldiers present at the beginning of the battle, only 216 were taken prisoner. The rest were killed or missing and presumed dead.

Despite heavy fighting and casualties on both sides, Japanese defeat was assured from the start. The Americans possessed an overwhelming superiority in arms and numbers. This, coupled with the impossibility of Japanese retreat or reinforcement, ensured that there was no plausible scenario in which the US could have lost the battle.

The battle was immortalized by Joe Rosenthal’s photograph of the raising of the US flag on top of the 545-foot Mount Suribachi by five Marines and a Naval Corpsman, which took place on the fifth day of the 35-day battle. The picture became the iconic image of the battle and has been heavily reproduced.

On February 19, 1985, the 40th anniversary of the landings, an event called The Reunion of Honor was held. Veterans of both sides who fought in the battle of Iwo Jima attended the event. The place was the invasion beach where the US forces landed. A memorial, with inscriptions engraved on both sides, was built at the center of the meeting place.

Are you deficient in vitamin D?

As many as one billion people worldwide are thought to have too little vitamin D in their blood. This has become a bigger concern lately. That’s because “D-ficiency” is now linked to more than just bone health and muscle strength. Infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and even the flu and common colds may be connected to a lack of this vitamin. Click here to read more.

Martin Luther King Day is January 16

The campaign for a federal holiday in Martin Luther King Jr.’s honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was initially founded as a holiday promoted by labor unions in contract negotiations, marking King Jr’s January 15th birthday. After King’s death, US Rep John Conyers introduced a bill in Congress to make King’s birthday a national holiday.

The main arguments mentioned by opponents of the holiday were that a paid holiday for federal employees would be too expensive and that a holiday to honor a private citizen would be contrary to longstanding tradition. Soon after, the King Center turned to support from the corporate community and the general public. Six million signatures were collected for a petition to Congress to pass the law. It was the largest petition in favor of an issue in U.S history.

Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed in 1986. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.

Where did those New Year traditions come from?

Celebrating the arrival of the New Year is perhaps the oldest holiday in recorded history. It started with the ancient Babylonians more than 4,000 years ago, and continued with the Egyptians, Romans, Celts and so on. Here are some other quick facts about New Year’s traditions and their origins:

  • January 1 officially became the first day of the new year in 46 BC, when Julius Caesar established the Julian calendar.
    /li>
  • The ancient Babylonians began the idea of New Year’s resolutions as a way to start the year off with a clean slate by returning borrowed items
  • Using a baby to represent the birth of the New Year started in ancient Greece in 600 BC. Early Egyptians also used the baby as a symbol of rebirth. The tradition was brought to early America by the Germans.
  • Some say the black-eyed pea’s lucky streak dates back to the pharaohs. Others say it started in Vicksburg, Virginia, during the Civil War when the town ran out of food while under siege and the inhabitants were lucky enough to discover cow peas (aka black-eyed peas). Meanwhile, cabbage leaves (a symbol of prosperity) are thought to bring prosperity to those who eat them on New Year’s Day.
  • In the US, one of the most famous parades is the Tournament of Roses where the floats are all decorated with flowers. The parade dates back to 1886 when members of the Valley Hunt Club decorated their carriages with flowers. The new year is celebrated in many countries with a parade. After spending many months creating colorful costumes, the Junkanoo Parade is held in the Bahamas where thousands of people celebrate in the New Year’s Festival. Prizes are given to the best, strangest and most beautiful costumes. In Nepal there is a four day parade during the New Year’s celebration, and in Greece people carry figures of apples, ships and stars. In Syria and Lebanon children parade door to door. Thailand’s parade is led by an honored woman and people march to the beat of drums and gongs. Dragons, elephants, buffalos and giants are popular parade costumes there.

Tips for safely clearing snow and ice

Clearing snow and ice from driveways and sidewalks is hard work. To prevent injuries, follow these safety tips.

  • Dress warmly, paying special attention to feet, hands, nose and ears.
  • Avoid shoveling snow if you are out of shape. If you have a history of heart trouble, don’t shovel snow unless your doctor approves.
  • Do light warm-up exercises before shoveling. Take frequent breaks.
  • If possible, push snow in front of you. If you have to lift it, pick up small amounts and lift with your legs, not your back. Do not toss snow over your shoulder or to the side.
  • Don’t drink alcohol before or while shoveling snow. Never smoke while shoveling.
  • Use rock salt or de-icing compounds to remove ice from steps, walkways, and sidewalks. Sand placed on walkways may also help prevent slipping.

How would you like to stop winter germs in their tracks?

Colds and flu – no big deal, right? Well, yes and no. They usually don’t last a really long time or cause serious problems. Colds can plague you with everything from a stuffy and runny nose to a scratchy throat and watery eyes – and nonstop sneezing that can even put your cat on edge. Flu bugs bring symptoms that can look a lot like a cold. But the flu tends to ambush you suddenly, last longer, and pile on other “treats” such as fever, fatigue, headache, chills, and achiness. Click here to read more.

Eggnog’s Ambiguous Origins

Eggnog, or a very similar drink, may have originated in East Anglia, England, though it may also have been developed from posset (a medieval European beverage made with hot milk).

It is said that the drink adopted the nog part of its name from the word noggin, a Middle English phrase used to describe a small, wooded carved mug used to serve alcohol.

Another name for this English drink was Egg Flip. Yet another story is that the term derived from the name egg-and-grog, a common colonial term used to describe rum. Eventually, the term was shortened to egg’n'grog, then simply egg nog.

The ingredients for the drink were too expensive and uncommon for the lower classes, but it was popular among the aristocracy. “You have to remember, the average Londoner rarely saw a glass of milk,” says author and historian James Humes. “There was no refrigeration, and the farms belonged to the big estates. Those who could get milk and eggs to make eggnog mixed it with brandy or Madeira or even sherry.”

Avoid a Christmas Tragedy by Doing a Holiday Fire Safety Check

Each year, we hear of home fires occurring during the holiday season. Sometimes lives are lost. Sometimes an entire home is lost to flames, and visions of little ones whose presents are gone can generate a longing to help. Holiday fires are not inevitable. Use the advice presented here to keep them from happening.

  • Have a working smoke detector just outside the kitchen, near bedrooms, and on every level of your home
  • Place a chemical fire extinguisher near the kitchen range and make sure everyone knows how to operate it
  • Degrease the top of the stove, the oven, broiler, and range hood. Grease can ignit and cause a fire.
  • When preparing a big dinner, make sure only one high-wattage appliance is plugged into an outlet or circuit. If you have a microwave, coffee pot, electric frying pan, and toaster running at the same time, you could be in danger.
  • If it’s very cold and you decide to use an electric heater, be sure it is not positioned near anything flammable, including curtains and decorations. Unplug the heater when you go to bed.
  • When opening gifts, handle wrappings with care. Never allow combustible wrappings to pile up near a heat source. Make sure no one is smoking near such flammables.
  • Never burn gift wrappings or a natural Christmas tree in your fireplace. It could cause a flash fire or a chimney fire.

The Boston Tea Party: December 16, 1773

The Boston Tea Party was a direct action by colonialists in Boston, Massachusetts, against the British Government. On December 16, 1773, after officials in Boston refused to return three shiploads of taxed tea to Britain, a group of colonists boarded the ships and destroyed the tea by throwing it into the Boston Harbor. The incident remains an iconic event of American history, and has often been referenced in other political protests.

The Tea Party was the culmination of a resistance movement throughout British America against the Tea Act, which had been passed by the British Parliament in 1773. Colonists objected to the Tea Act mainly because it violated their right to be taxed only be their own elected representatives.

Protesters had successfully prevented the unloading of taxed tea in three other colonies, but in Boston, embattled Royal Governor Thomas Hutchinson refused to allow the tea to be returned to Britain. He apparently did not expect that the protesters would choose to destroy the tea.

The Boston Tea Party was a key event in the growth of the American Revolution. Parliament responded in 1774 with the Coercive Acts, which, among other provisions, closed Boston’s commerce until the British East India Company had been repaid for the destroyed tea. Colonists, in turn, responded with additional acts of protest, and by convening the First Continental Congress, which petitioned the British monarch for repeal of the acts and coordinated colonial resistance to them. The crisis escalated, and the American Revolutionary War began near Boston in 1775.

Diabetes: How big is the risk?

Did you know that one in four people have diabetes and don’t even know it? Could you be one of them? If so, you’re in good company. About 26 million Americans have diabetes. This month’s health tip tells you what you can do to avoid this disease and how to handle it if you find that you are diabetic. Click here to read more.

Thanksgiving Through the Years!

After the first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621, each of the 13 American colonies held an annual harvest festival and day of thanksgiving. There was no set day for the holiday, and it varied among the colonies.

In 1777, George Washington decreed a day of thanksgiving to celebrate the British defeat during the Revolutionary War, and he and subsequent presidents proclaimed Thanksgiving Days periodically over the next 86 years, although not every year and not on any particular date. In the early 1800′s, these annual Presidential proclamations came to an end, and it wasn’t until 1863 that the holiday resumed.

During the Civil War, President Lincoln declared a national day of Thanksgiving to occur on the last Thursday of November, and it has been observed annually ever since. In 1939, in an effort to stimulate the economy during the Great Depression, President Franklin Roosevelt tried to move the holiday to the third Thursday in November, giving stores more time to advertise Christmas merchandise before December 25. About half the states refused to change the date, and in 1941, Congress compromised by choosing the fourth Thursday of November

Marine Corps Day is November 10

The Marine Corps was founded in 1775 to serve as infantry aboard naval vessels and was responsible for the security of the ship and its crew. They conducted offensive and defensive combat during boarding actions and defended the ship’s officers from mutiny.

America’s first amphibious assault landing occurred early in the Revolutionary War, on March 3, 1776 as the Marines gained control of Fort Montague and Fort Nassau, a British ammunition depot and naval port in New Providence, the Bahamas. The role of the Marine Corps has since expanded significantly, including the use of Marines in the seizure of bases and other duties on land to support naval campaigns.

Throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries, Marine detachments served aboard Navy cruisers, battleships and carriers, serving as the ship’s landing force, manning the ship’s weapons and providing shipboard security. Marines would also develop tactics and techniques of amphibious assault on defended coastlines in time for use in World War II. The Corps’ original mission of providing shipboard security finally ended in the 1990′s when nuclear weapons were withdrawn from active deployment and the battleships were retired.

Beer Bubbles Through Human History

Ben Franklin perhaps shocked his puritan neighbors by declaring: Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. Who can argue with the ever-wise American Ben Franklin?

After all, in the thousands of years before Ben’s time, beer served a wider purpose. It was a staple of life in many parts of the world. About 6,000 years ago, the Sumerians discovered the fermentation process by chance. They became the first civilized culture to brew beer, which they called the “divine drink.”

The Babylonians brewed eight types of beer made from various types of grains. Their king, Hammurabi, established a daily beer ration. Least important people got two liters per day, the most important got five.

Skip the Romans. They liked wine and thought beer was a barbarian drink. In the Middles Ages, beer was brewed in monasteries. Each monk was allowed up to 5 liters of beer a day, also selling beer in monastery pubs.

In the 1800s, several advances improved the quality of beer. Carl Linde invented refrigeration. Louis Pasteur developed pasteurization in the 1870s, which greatly improved beer. Danish scientist Christian Hansen isolated a single yeast cell that could be reproduced, improving the fermentation. By the 1960s, wooden barrels were replaced by metal barrels. Today’s barrels are made of stainless steel or aluminum.

The Dangers of Tanning – Indoors or Outdoors

Ever been mistaken for Casper the Friendly Ghost? Even if you’re not quite that white, you might still value a nice tan. Many people think a little color gives them a healthier, maybe even sexier, look.

So isn’t it ironic that getting that glorious tan can actually put you at risk? Read More

July 20th is Moon Day!

On July 20, 1969, the lunar module Eagle separated from the command module Columbia. As descent began, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin found that they were passing landmarks on the surface of the moon four seconds early and reported that they were ‘long.”

They would land miles west of their intended target point. The lunar module navigation and guidance computer distracted the crew with several unusual program alarms.

Inside Mission Control Center in Houston, Texas, computer engineer Jack Garman told guidance officer Steve Bales it was safe to continue the descent and this was relayed to the crew.

When Armstrong again looked outside, he saw that the computer’s landing target was in a boulder-strewn area just north and east of a 600-meter diameter crater. Armstrong took a semi-automatic control with Aldren calling out altitude and velocity data, landed on July 20 with about 25 seconds of fuel left.

Did You Know That JULY is National Blueberry Month?

Maine is the blueberry production capital of North America, producing almost 100 percent of all berries harvested in the country. North America is the world’s leading blueberry producer, accounting for nearly 90 percent of world production.

Here are some fun blueberry facts.

  • July was designated National Blueberry Month because this month production is at its peak.
  • Native Americans once called them “starberries” because the five points of the blueberry blossoms make a star shape.
  • Blueberry juice had medicinal value for Native Americans as well, and was used to treat persistent coughs and other illnesses.
  • Blueberries were commonly used to make pemmican, a jerky-type of dried food packed for sustenance on long journeys.
  • Early settlers of America introduced blueberries into their diets when other food sources were scarce.
  • During the Civil War, blueberries were collected, packaged and sent to Union troops for use as a food sample.
  • The blueberry muffin is America’s favorite muffin type.
  • Blueberries contain more antioxidants than most other fruits or vegetables, and may help prevent damage caused by cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s.
