Oh, my aching joints!

With middle age often comes an all too familiar visitor. Marked by the gradual loss of cartilage, osteoarthritis can show up in many joints – from keyboard-typing fingers to tennis-twisting knees. Over time, it can cause swollen, aching, knarled joints – and put a major crimp in your style!

If you know exactly what we are talking about, you’ll want to read this month’s Health Tip. Click here to read more.

Jazz Month: Remembering Louis Armstrong

From New Orleans, Louisiana, Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong was a legendary jazz trumpeter and singer. Armstrong came to prominence in the 1920s. At the time, many considered his style with both the trumpet and cornet to be fresh and innovative. To say Armstrong was influential on jazz is an understatement. He changed the focus from collective improvision to solo performers. His singing voice was distinctive, instantly recognizable.

Armstrong combined lyrics and melody to create a unique improvisational style, but his influence extended beyond jazz. By the end of his career in the 1960s, he was widely regarded as a profound influence on popular music in general.

Armstrong often stated in public interviews that he was born on July 4, 1900. Although he died in 1971, it was not until the mid-1980s that his true birth date, August 4, 1901, dwas discovered through the examination of baptismal records. He was born into a very poor family, the grandson of former slaves. Armstrong spent his youth in poverty, in a rough neighborhood of Uptown New Orleans, known as “Back of Town.” His father, William Armstrong, abandoned the family when Louis was an infant to become involved with another woman.

Did you know that the sapphire is September’s birthstone?

The sapphire is the official birthstone for the month of September, as adopted by the American National Association of Jewelers. Sapphires are traditionally given as a gen for the 5th, 23rd, and 45th wedding anniversaries. At 9.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness, sapphire is the second hardest natural mineral. Blue is by far the most popular color, but they can be almost any color, including yellow, green, white, pink, orange, brown and purple. Star sapphires usually have six ray stars, but twelve ray stars are also known.

Heating colorless and very pale blue sapphires to high temperatures is done to give them an intense blue color. This treatment can also improve the clarity of the stones by removing tiny inclusions. Sapphires were first created synthetically in 1902 and are hard to distinguish from natural sapphires, except by gemologists. Lab grown sapphires range in price, and smaller stones are frequently used in less expensiver jewelry.

Incontinence

Incontinence is a loss of control of urinary or fecal elimination and affects millions of people.

There are several types of Incontinence.  Following are the different types of urinary incontinence:

  • Stress – involuntary loss of small amounts of urine.  It usually happens when you cough, laugh, sneeze, lift,  or exercise.  It is caused by multiple vaginal births, enlarged prostate, pelvic trauma or loss of pelvic tone.
  • Urge – inability to control urinating once you feel the need to void.  It is caused by Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, an enlarged prostate, spinal cord injuries or Urinary Tract Infections (UTI’s).
  • Reflex – Frequent loss of urine with no warning.  It is caused by spinal cord injuries, brain tumors, and/or strokes.
  • Overflow – Leakage of urine when the bladder is full which can be caused by diseases that cause blockage of the natural urine passageway.
  • Functional – Caused by factors outside of the urinary tract such as immobility or cognitive impairment.
  • Mixed Incontinence – combination of forms of incontinence.

It is important that you talk to your doctor to discuss options and potential treatments.  Possible types of treatment could include behavioral techniques (i.e. bowel & bladder training and/or kegel exercises), or interventional strategies such as surgical interventions or drug therapies.

There are many products available for those living with incontinence.  It is important that these products correlate with the type of incontinence you are experiencing.  Options include disposable bladder control pads, protective underwear and briefs, as well as external catheters for males.  Correct sizing of these products is critical – the better the fit the better the absorption.  There is also a vast array of skin care products for cleansing and protecting the perineal skin.
