We have some really easy tips for better health!

Some of these ideas, recommended by health writer Tara Parker-Pope, are not new, but put together they can make a big difference in your weight and fitness level.

First, try to eat together at the table. People consume more when eating in front of the TV. And foods eaten “on the go” are generally higher in calories.

Second, spend some time playing with your kids. Ride a bike with them, jump rope, play touch football or soccer at least 20 minutes a day.

Third, focus on your favorite foods. Instead of trying to give up your favorites, eat smaller portions or switch to lower-fat versions. They can be just as good, and many people say they can’t taste any difference at all.

Fourth, eat soup! Yes, soup! Volume foods like soup leave you feeling full on fewer calories. Check “The Volumetric Eating Plan” by Barbara Rolls for more information.

Finally, eat at home as much as possible. Restaurant food tends to have more fat, calories and sodium. And in recent years, the trend has been for serving sizes to dramatically increase.

March is National Nutrition Month

National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign sponsored annually by the American Diabetic Association (ADA). Eating well can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, obesity and hypertension. Eating well means a variety of healthy foods in the right amounts so your body gets the nutrients needed to maintain good health and work properly. The following are tips on how to practice good nutrition this and every month.

Eat smaller meals, including a vegetable as the center of the plate, with smaller meat and starch servings. Include at least one serving of fruit and vegetables with every meal.

Drink more water between meals. Try veggies or a handful of nuts for a snack and fresh fruit for something sweet.

Reduce your intake of deep-fried foods and cancer-causing transfats and baked goods.

Reduce the amount of added sugar, corn syrup, and salt in your diet. Use spices to season your food instead.

Bananas Fight Heartburn, Depression and More

Most people know that bananas are an excellent resource for potassium (one ripe banana supplies more than 10 percent of an adult’s daily requirement). That’s important because people with a low dietary intake of potassium are 28 percent more likely to suffer a stroke than those who consume higher levels, according to a study conducted by Tulane University. Lesser known medical uses of bananas include the following.

Depression: Bananas are a good source of tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin, a chemical in the brain that helps regulate mood.

Diarrhea: Unripened bananas and plantains are a rich source of tannins, astringent plant compounds that help stop water accumulation in the intestines, thus diminishing diarrhea.

Heartburn and Ulcers: Bananas neutralize acidity and soothe and coat the esophageal tissue with pectin, a substance used as a thickener and stabilizer in jellies.

Important: In rare cases, bananas may trigger an allergic reaction. Bananas with blackened skin can increase blood sugar levels. Because bananas have high levels of potassium, people with kidney problems should check with their doctors before eating this fruit.
